Doherty Institute (The University of Melbourne)
The Doherty Institute is a world class biomedical facility specialising in human infectious diseases and immunity, located in the Parkville precinct.
This specialist institute brings together seven major organisational groups, consolidating and enhancing biomedical expertise and leadership in all aspects of research, diagnostics, investigation, reference and teaching in human infectious disease.
The design includes provision for PC2, PC3 and PC4 laboratories together with bioresources, electron microscope and teaching facilities.
Innovations with this project have included:
- This facility has stringent vibration control to achieve ASHRAE Curve E criteria throughout laboratory and laboratory support areas on all floors.
- The floor structure is robust to allow a high degree of future adaptability to respond to the ever-changing needs of leading edge research and development.
- The design of appropriate zoning strategies in response to maximising floor plate sizes provides effective separation of containment areas, general access, service access to laboratories and support spaces. The arrangement of primary spaces propagated through each zone provides the ability to support changes in use to suit differing requirements of each user, as well as changes in requirements over time.
- The documentation prepared by JMP is particularly suited to procurement by fast tracked GMP.
