Monash University Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct (Strip). Stages 2/3
JMP completed the design and contract administration of structural and civil works for the Monash STRIP 2/3.
This $100 million facility is on the University campus at Clayton. The all new three building complex houses 35,000sq m of substantial laboratories/ research and associated equipment areas, micro imaging, rodent housing and teaching facilities combined with office and other commercial spaces.
The design includes:
- Long span floors to provide clear open spaces and flexibility of layout to suit rapid changes in use for experimentation.
- Vibration control set high as ASHRAE Curve F for laboratory areas.
- Preformed penetrations through floors and beams for future vertical and horizontal services alterations.
- PC2/3 laboratories where crack control is critical.
- Active mass cooling in all floors.
- Large internal service risers for many exhaust flue risers.
Innovations with this project included:
- The building features an active mass cooling system via a pipe network cast in the structure. It has stringent vibration control to achieve ASHRAE F criteria. The design included precast and post tensioned concrete to achieve a very buildable solution and was delivered by traditional tender, under budget and on time, fully occupied March 2009. $10M saved from the Project budget.
